Hand wraps: the cheapest protection you own

The 27 bones in each hand were not designed for punching. Wraps hold the wrist straight and bind the hand into a single solid unit — gloves cushion the impact, but wraps are the structure underneath.

Your options

TypeProsTrade-offs
Traditional cotton (non-elastic)Durable, breathable, classic feelTakes practice to wrap well
Semi-elastic ("Mexican style")Conforms to the hand, most popular choiceCan be over-tightened; loses stretch over time
Quick wraps / gel glovesSeconds to put on; fine for casual bag sessionsLess wrist support than a proper wrap job
Competition gauze & tapeMaximum protection, per rulesetSingle-use; needs a skilled wrapper

Length

Adult wraps commonly run about 3–4.5 m (120″–180″). Longer wraps give more coverage and suit bigger hands or thicker wrap styles; shorter suit small hands and kids.

Wrapping principles (whatever pattern you use)

Care

Wraps absorb everything. Air-dry after every session, wash in a mesh bag regularly, and own several pairs so a wet pair never goes back on. Replace when the elastic dies or edges fray into strings.
