The beginner kit: buy little, buy right
Nobody needs a bag full of gear for their first month. Most gyms lend the big items to newcomers; what you actually want early is the hygiene-critical stuff that touches your skin and teeth.
Week one: the real essentials
- Hand wraps — a couple of pairs. Cheap, personal, needed from day one. Guide
- Mouthguard — before any partner work at all. Guide
- Shorts & rash-guard/tees — unrestricted hips for kicks and knees.
- Water bottle and a small towel — unglamorous, non-optional.
Month one or two
- Your own gloves — once you know you're staying. A 14–16oz all-round pair suits most adults. Sizing
- Shin guards — the week your coach mentions sparring or kick drilling. Guide
Hold off on
- Headgear — until you're actually sparring regularly; gyms often lend it at first.
- Competition anything — ruleset-specific gear can wait for an actual bout.
- A heavy bag for home — buy after three months of consistency, not three days of enthusiasm. Bag guide
One principle: spend on what touches your skin and teeth first, your fists second, and decoration never.
