Glove sizing: ounces and fit

Glove “size” is mostly weight, measured in ounces — and the weight is about padding volume, not hand size. Here is the system everyone uses but nobody explains.

What the weights mean

WeightTypical use
8–10ozCompetition (per ruleset) and some pad work for smaller athletes
12ozBag and pad work for lighter athletes; all-round use for smaller frames
14ozAll-round training for mid-sized athletes; light partner drills
16ozThe default sparring weight in most gyms, and the safe all-round buy for most adults
House rules beat charts. Most gyms require 16oz for sparring regardless of your size — ask your coach before buying a sparring pair.
